Stomatodynia Definition
Stomatodynia is a condition in which the tongue, lips, or most areas of the mouth feels a burning pain without obvious reasons. It is sometimes referred to as burning mouth syndrome, scalded mouth syndrome, burning tongue syndrome, burning lips syndrome, and glossodynia.

The doctor reviews the patient's medical history, examine the mouth and ask the patient to describe the symptoms as well as his or her oral habits and oral care routine. The patient undergoes a general medical examination to check for signs of any associated conditions. The condition may be caused by various reasons such as menopause, psychological problems, nutritional deficiencies, and mouth disorders such as oral thrush and dry mouth. Some studies suggest that dysfunctional or damaged nerves may also be one of the causes.
