Postural Hypotension Definition

 Postural hypotension, also known as orthostatic hypotension, is a type of hypertension characterized by a sudden decline in blood pressure, usually more than 20/10 mm Hg, that usually happens when an individuals is standing immediately after resting for a significant period of time. The condition is commonly known as head rush or dizzy spell. Oder individuals suffer from the disease more than young ones.

 Postural hypotension is treated with medications. Lifestyle changes may also be necessary to avoid occurrence of the condition.

Postural Hypotension Symptoms and Signs

 Symptoms of postural hypotension include include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, blurred or dimmed vision, generalized numbness/tingling of the extremities and fainting. These symptoms occur while the patient is standing.

Postural Hypotension Causes

 Postural hypotension is primarily caused by the pooling of blood in the lower extremities as result gravitational pull which lowers cardiac output and lower blood pressure in the arteries. A secondary factor though is necessary for postural hypotension to occur. These secondary factors may include hypovolemia (decreased amount of blood in the body), diseases, medications, or, very rarely, safety harnesses.
