Peritoneum Cancer Definition
Peritoneum cancer pertains to cancer originating from the peritoneum, a membrane that lines the insides of the abdomen including all the organs found here like the intestines, liver and stomach. Peritoneum cancer is a rare type of cancer mainly affecting women, similar to ovarian cancer. Peritoneum cancer is also alternatively known as primary peritoneal cancer or PPC.
Peritoneum Cancer Diagnosis
Any of these tests or a combination, may be used to diagnose the disease: Pelvic exam, ultrasound (including pelvic or vaginal ultrasound), CT scan, Lower GI series or Barium enema to examine organs in the pelvis region for any abnormalities in size and shape. Blood tests may also be done to measure the level of CA-125, a tumor marker. In addition, a biopsy of tissue sample may also be obtained for lab analysis.
Peritoneum Cancer Treatment
Like many cancer treatments, peritoneal cancer is treated through surgery to remove the cancer as well as chemotherapy. Radiotherapy is used occasionally if the cancer comes back after surgery and chemotherapy. Because this type of cancer can only be detected in its advanced stage, patients also need to supportive care.

Symptoms go undetected for a long time. When they do appear, the most common symptoms of peritoneum cancer are: loss of appetite, nausea, vague indigestion, unexplained weight gain, swelling and pain in the abdomen, and changes in bowel habit.
