Glomerulosclerosis Definition
Glomerulosclerosis is a condition wherein the kidney's glomerulus hardens. It is a general condition that branches out to either focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and nodular glomerulosclerosis, for diabetics. Both diseases are characterized by a scarring in the glomeruli.
Glomerulosclerosis Diagnosis
Because the scarring in the glomeruli alter the functioning of the kidneys in filtering waste, a large amount of protein presents itself in the urine, called proteinuria. This condition is diagnosed through a routine urinalysis during a physical examination. However, glomerulosclerosis is only one of many possible causes of proteinuria, and to cross out the others a kidney biopsy may be conducted.
Glomerulosclerosis Treatment
Certain factors of a patient's health need to be determined for treatment. These include overall health, medical history, age, severity of disease, tolerance for certain medications and therapies, and the patient's preference. Medications usually include dialysis, immunosuppressant drugs, diet modification, kidney transplant, and blood pressure medications.
Glomerulosclerosis Symptoms and Signs
During the early phases, the disease may be asymptomatic. However, proteinuria, or the occurrence or large amounts of protein in the urine, is an important warning sign.
Glomerulosclerosis Causes
Various types of kidney conditions may cause glomerulosclerosis in both adults and children. Diabetes is also another cause for the disease.
