Glomerulonephritis Definition
Glomerulonephritis is a kidney disease wherein the glomeruli, or internal kidney structures, become inflamed. Also known as glomerular nephritis, the disease is a result of a problem within the body's immune system.
Glomerulonephritis Diagnosis
The symptoms develop over time, and the disease is usually diagnosed after one undergoes a routine physical examination, revealing an abnormal urinalysis. Also because it is related to high blood pressure, it may be diagnosed when doctors determine that the high blood pressure is hard to control even with medications. Other laboratory tests that may reveal anemia or azotemia can also help in the diagnosis. Other exams include kidney biopsy, abnormal CT scan, IVP, and chest x-ray.

The treatment given to patients with the disorder depends on the cause and the severity of its symptoms. High blood pressure is an important aspect that must be treated. Medications include corticosteroids, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressives.

The symptoms of glomerulonephritis includes foamy or dark urine, weight loss, vomiting, nausea, headaches, fatigue, general itching, hiccups, easy bruising, drowsiness, decreased alertness, delirium, confusion, coma, muscle twitching, cramps, seizures, excessive urination, blood in vomit or stools, and nosebleeding.
Glomerulonephritis Causes
Although it is known that the disease is related to a problem within the body's immune system, the exact cause is unknown. However, there are certain diseases that are associated with glomerulonephritis, and these include post-streptococcal GN, membranoproliferative GN I and II, Goodpasture syndrome, IgA nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, lupus nephritis, and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.
