Chromomycosis Definition

 Chromomycosis, also known as chromoblastomycosis, is a fungal infection common in places of tropical climate. It can be caused by different types of fungi that thrive under the skin and spreads slowly and becomes difficult to treat.

Chromomycosis Diagnosis

 Chromoblastomycosis is diagnosed by scraping the lesion and adding potassium hydroxide on it, then observing it under a microscope. What the doctor looks for are the Medlar bodies or sclerotic cells which are active in the lesion. The fungal scrapings are also cultured to determine which organism is involved in the infection.

Chromomycosis Characteristics and Features

 Chromoblastomycosis is a "silent infection" whose symptoms are often unnoticed. The infection it makes take up a number of years and afterwhich a small red papule appears. It is usually not painful until the infection causes complications.

Chromomycosis Complications

 Once the fungi infection has started to spread, it may go deep inside the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It may as well spread through the blood and lymph vessels creating metastatic lesions at different sites. Chromoblastomycosis may also cause bacterial infection and may develop into lymph stasis and elephantiasis.
