Dr. David W. Johnson found this study, and it was interesting to see patients who have had back surgery are still utilizing pain medication a year or more after surgery.
Back Surgery to Dependency?
One year after spine surgery, almost a third of patients were still using narcotic painkillers, reported a recent medical study. The findings were reported in MedPage Today after a***yzing data from 172 patients who underwent elective surgery for repair of the cervical spine. Of those who were not using the drugs before surgery, 18 percent were using them a year later. Said Richard Deyo, MD, a professor of family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University who has done research on back pain and opioid use, "The worrisome thing is patients often are getting opioids because it is the easiest thing."

School of Hard Knocks
(to the Spine and Back)
Researchers in Portugal examined the relationship between undersize school chairs, low desks and overweight backpacks with chronic back pain in adolescents. In a cross-sectional study of 138 twelve to fifteen-year olds, they found that almost two thirds (80) of the students suffered from back pain and that large differences between desk height and elbow height correlated with increased likelihood of pain. "Our results also showed that there was no association between backpack weight, body mass index (BMI) and back pain," the team said.

With school starting, it is important to make sure our children are carring their heavy backpacks properly. Backpacks should be worn over both shoulders so the weight is properly distributed. Carring a backpack on one shoulder can cause an imbalance in the spinal column leading to other health issues.
