HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY DRY SKIN SEASON: The overwhelming majority of moisturizers on the market are petroleum based and have a whole bunch of words that you can't pronounce as ingredients(chemicals). None of these chemicals are good for your skin or your body. Your skin is the LARGEST ORGAN of the human body. Anything you put on it will grit inside of you. That being said, you should never put anything on your skin that you could not safely ingest. So instead of commercial moisturizers, get yourself a jar of ORGANIC COCONUT OIL to use during dry skin season. It not only moisturizes but actually feeds your skin and body vital nutrients that they crave. As an added benefit, coconut oil is naturally antimicrobial and antiviral!

TO GET A FLU SHOT OR NOT?! I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the pros and cons of getting a flu shot and then make the decision that makes the most sense to you. I chose years ago never to have a flu shot. THIS IS WHY THEY DON'T MAKE SENSE FOR ME: 1) It is not increased exposure to the flu virus that makes you sick, its an immune system thats compromised due to decreased resistance to the virus. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is what keeps resistance strong. 2) I'm highly skeptical of the so called experts ability to accurately determine what strains of the flu virus will be in southeastern Wisconsin at a certain time of year. The way the experts determine this is by going to ASIA(?!) in January or February to see what strains of flu are showing up over there. Based on that information, they determine that the flu strains showing up in Asia will be the ones that will hit us and make the vaccines based on this information. 3) The vaccines are cultured in a medium that may contain genetic material from animals. This genetic material can bind to your DNA altering it forever. 4) Vaccines contain a whole bunch of other ingredients other than the c***tail of flu viruses. I don't care to have any of these ingredients injected into my body, especially mercury(thimersol). Here is a list of just some of the ingredients in the flu vaccine: In addition to mercury, flu vaccines also contain other toxic or hazardous ingredients like: Aluminum -- a neurotoxin that has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease Triton X-100 -- a detergent Phenol (carbolic acid) Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) Betapropiolactone - a disinfectant Nonoxynol - used to kill or stop growth of STDs Octoxinol 9 - a v*****l spermicide Sodium phosphate I SAY...ICK!! (;-{(} 5) The vaccine does not generate a normal immune response as in passes your first line of defense, your skin, by being injected into you. 6) Your immune system now has to mount a response to this c***tail of flu viruses and toxic additives that have been injected into you thus lessening your immune systems ability to deal with cold and flu bugs that you are naturally being exposed to in the environment. This INCREASES your chance of getting the flu. 7) If the experts predicted incorrectly that what was in Asia will be here, then you had the wrong flu viruses injected into you and will receive zero immunity to what is actually floating around out there. AS A SIDE NOTE... It also makes no sense to me that the flu vaccine is so strongly recommended for people with already compromised immune function such as the elderly. How does injecting a c***tail of flu viruses that have a good probability of not being correct for the area, help the immune compromised? Their already weakened immune systems will have to muster a response to what has been injected into them. They will have that much less immune function to deal with what they are naturally being exposed to and leave them ripe for flu viruses to do there handiwork!

IS IT FLU SEASON OR STRESS SEASON?! At this time of year the FLU is always a hot topic at the office. This is strictly a Dr. Jim opinion piece but is based on a pile of information garnered from a variety of sources over the past 25 years. IS IT MORE FLU OR MORE STRESS? It is my opinion that the reason people experience more illness starting at this time of year is because our bodies are placed in an environment that is ripe for germs to do their handiwork versus being due to exposure to more germs. The flu virus does not migrate from some foreign land en masse to southeast Wisconsin and start to infect people and then migrate to another part of the world when the weather warms up around here. Truth is, we are continually exposed to all manner of bacteria and viruses all year long that could make us ill. But fortunately we have this amazing thing called an immune system that keeps these little b*****s from making us sick. So, it is not an increased exposure to the flu virus that makes us sick, its a decrease in our resistance that allows the virus to create havoc. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS TIME OF YEAR THAT LOWERS OUR RESISTANCE 1) More time spent indoors means less time spent outside in the sun creating all that naturally occurring vitamin D that our immune system needs to stay strong. 2) More indoor time usually means a more sedentary activity level and less exercise. 3) Starting with Halloween our diets start to include naughtier food choices and a whole lot more sugar. Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of two- and-a-half 12-ounce cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours!! 4) As the holidays approach, many people start to experience higher stress levels. This can come from feeling the pressure or sense of obligation of spending extra money, attending functions you really don't want to attend and traveling to places you'd rather not travel to. 5) Less quality sleep as we push ourselves during the holidays to do more than perhaps we need to. 6) Financial stress after the first of the year as we realize we may have over extended ourselves during the holidays. 7) More financial stress as the tax man cometh! As the snow melts, the temperature rises and the sun shines a little longer. We start to get outside more, get back to exercising, eat a little better and feel less stress as we look forward to summer. Then, miraculously, the flu virus leaves southeastern Wisconsin so we can enjoy all that summer has to offer! KEEP YOUR IMMUNE FUNCTION STRONG If this sounds like you, why not break the pattern this year? Take the action steps necessary to keep your immune system strong. Get your vitamin D. Keep your diet healthy and the sweet indulgences to a minimum. Commit to regular exercise all winter. Set holiday spending limits. Don't sacrifice sleep in favor of the hustle and bustle. Don't feel guilty about keeping your travels and celebrations at a level that makes the holidays enjoyable versus a hassle. Lastly, make the time to keep your nervous system healthy during the holiday season with regular adjustments. After all, your nervous system regulates your immune function!
